The short answer:
Peer Private Lessons is an organization of skilled high school students who teach weekly private musical lessons to our peers for free. Most of us go to Huron High School and are members of the Symphony Orchestra.
The longer answer, in context:
In Ann Arbor, ensemble music education starts in fifth grade, where every public school student plays a band or orchestra instrument. Yet private instruction is an equally essential part of musical development, fostering technical abilities and offering an increased sense of musicality.
We have realized that, fro many students, typical private lessons can be prohibitively expensive and intense. The average high school musician looks to be able to play together with their friends, and make a little music. That's where we come in.

A new way to take lessons:
Our lessons are built by students in cooperation with local music teachers and taught by qualified student mentors who have reached a high level on their instrument. What distinguishes our lessons are the following three characteristics:
Sound-Focus We're not looking to create the next generation of virtuosos. Our lessons, heavy in fundamentals like scales and tone work, are designed to empower musicians to enjoy their sound whether they're playing Haydn or Despacito. |
Accessibility Our central tenet is making quality music lessons accessible to all students, regardless of their financial situation. Our faculty members, therefore, teach as volunteers, and we charge no fees for lessons. Lessons happen wherever is most convenient for the students, usually at school. |
Collaboration The musical learning process is a cooperative one, and the small age and cultural difference between our students and our faculty facilitates collaboration according to individuals' specific strengths and weaknesses. |
