Operating Officer, Pioneer
Gina is a cellist and a senior at Community High School: she comes over to Pioneer in the second half of the school day to play in their Symphony Orchestra. In elementary school, her music teacher told her that her hands might be too small for the cello and she should try playing the violin instead. Gina proceeded to cry for the rest of the day before her teacher allowed her to play the cello. Gina continues to play the cello because of her fellow musicians that inspire her to improve and become passionate about the music they are playing. She comes over all the way from Community to be a part of the amazing Symphony Orchestra because of its passionate and fun-loving player community, that has toured places like New Orleans and the Midwest Music Clinic. Gina found interest in PPL because of her own experience with learning from her peers: she believes that one of the best ways to improve playing is to consult with your fellow players about techniques and strategies that help them. She hopes to teach and learn as well through the PPL program, and is most excited to meet musicians she might not have met otherwise.
Outside of PPL and orchestra, Gina is a member of the Pioneer Women’s Varsity Tennis Team, and enjoys being outdoors and getting tan. She is the editor-in-chief for the Communicator Online at Community High School, which was one out of three Spartan Award winners in the state. She also enjoys volunteering on several youth-driven organizations in Ann Arbor, serving on the Neutral Zone Board and miRcore’s research group. Her favorite movie is Surf’s Up and her favorite music artist is Mitski. She hopes to major in public health in the future and focus on health disparity research at a university. So far, she is getting through junior year and excited for both the challenges and fun times senior year will bring.
